Who are the Fish Heads?

The Fish Heads regard their music as rockin'folk and 'grass, but they are definitely not mainstream bluegrass. You will find old rock standards from the Bee Gees and Aerosmith, to Steve Miller, AC DC and Johnny Cash. They have been influenced by bluegrass, rock, folk, blues and Texas swing, as well as pop unusuals like Elle King and Jessie J.These folks are not only fun to listen to, but they provide fun banter on a stage. Listening to Mike and Kim sing their sweet harmonies is a delight to the ears and watching how much they enjoy performing together is part of the whole Fish Heads experience.

The original Fish Heads are Mike Monson and Kim Curtis-Monson, a married musical duo that have been together for more than 25 years. This couple plays guitar, bass, mandolin and Mike does some fancy footwork on drum pedals. They also do most of the lead and harmony vocal work and will give you goosebumps with what they do. Joining them in the newest venture of the band has been Paul Jones on dobro , pedal steel guitar, 6 string guitar and 5 string banjo. Paul is a seasoned musician who has played with lots of the Nashville biggies. He is a multi-instrumentalist  and vocalist, who brings his own brand of music and that "old time country sound" to the band, as well as has a solo CD project out and is a man who shows up on  lots of studio projects of others.  Paul has been known to open shows doing a few solo numbers...he's amazing.  If he isn't stirring up your emotional dust with his pedal steel, he'll be getting his Oh Brother Where Art Thou on with his banjo and dobro. Whoever they have joining them on stage you are sure to find it to your liking...they go with the flow these fish.

Why Fish Heads.....the name? Well, that is simple. They all have a long history with fishing in their lives. Mike and Kim grew up fishing with their folks from a very young age. Some say, they learned to fish before they could walk. They love to fish by and on Lake Superior and travel during the summer fishing and have spent time playing music at places like Isle Royale and the Apostle Islands. They also spend time on the northern Minnesota rivers with the early steel head and fall salmon runs. Everyone involved enjoys eating the fish that Mike and Kim catch and smoke...... so there you have it, they just plain like to fish and eat fish...... .therefore, why not The Fish Heads?
